Travel as education

Winter in South Korea

I am convinced that travelling is the highest quality real life education. You are put into situations to sort out on the spot.

Dealing with people from all walks of life.

Your soft skills being honed in the process in a real open classroom and not a fake closed in one.

You learn to …

1 appreciate people. I’ve met such kind people who helped me on my journey. To my surprise there were people who cared about my plight and wanted me to come out the other end alive. Of course there are the bad ones who want to use you in any way that suits them but that’s where your street smart antennae’s get strengthened and super sensitive to bull-shit.

2 notice cultural differences and similarities. I had a great time collecting good ideas from abroad. There were many things or ideas that I felt would be beneficial back home. I would not have noted this new valuable information if I had not stepped out of my comfort zone. Then also there were some things that I didn’t like. You can read my post about what I did like here: Things that impressed me about South Korea.

3 keep up to date with historical information and current affairs. Visiting historical sites and watching festivals increased my curiosity and I am in awe of how far people have come despite hardships. I’ve tuned in more to affairs happening around the globe. Checking in on overseas relatives and friends. I also absorbed the interesting perspectives of the locals on current affairs.

4 get good solid independence. I was forced to believe in myself, research information, manage my finances and plan ahead carefully. I truly became an adult. Turning 18 or holding a degree unfortunately is not a good enough indicator of reaching a successful adulting level.

5 learn languages. Learning a language is no easy feat. You need to practise everyday to master it. It’s also good exercise for your brain. #gettingbrilliantlysmart. Read my blog about learning Korean efficiently.

6 soak in natures variety. I saw plants and animals unique to mine. My camera was definitely overworked taking snap shots of beautiful new natural wonders. Adjusting to another country’s weather adds to the challenge but you figure it out and enjoy it all anyway.

7 adapt to life’s dirty surprises I had such a neat plan how my journey through South Korea was going to be. Well … life had other ideas. I was thrown a bunch of lemons and forced to think outside the box and turn them into lemonade. However, that is a story for another day. Make sure you subscribe to my site to not miss this story time in the future.

8 get better social skills. I learned to not be shy and ask people for help when I was lost. In the beginning I tried to do everything myself but eventually to avoid making so many irritating blunders, you just need to be brave and ask. You meet so many other travellers and it’s impossible not to get involved in activities with them. Some are real social butterflies, that they will happily help you out of your shell in no time.

9 get so fit. It is hard to be a couch potato when you are surrounded by beautiful people and a scenic environment. I have walked a lot. Definitely way more than I did at home and I really don’t mind. It’s all part of my exciting adventure and having a strong, healthy body is important.

10 improve assertive skills. I have learned to get more thick skinned and strengthen my assertive skills. Not everyone you meet believes in you and you can be met with their irritating condescending attitude. It can be tough if you liked this person to begin with. Anyway I’ve learned to stay rooted in the belief I have the strength to keep moving forward despite life’s backlashes and to successfully identify who my real friends are.
